Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea, a form of sleep disorder, starts when blocked airways cause low levels of oxygen in the blood, known as hypoxia. Hypoxia interrupts breathing patterns and results in a broad range of chronic illnesses.

Statistically, more men than women are affected by Sleep Apnea, however many post menopausal women suffer from the ill-effects of sleep apnea. We provide the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, which is a useful evaluation tool for helping evaluate the potential that you have sleep apnea. This disease is characterized by brief periods where you don’t breathe for 10 seconds or greater.

Sleep apnea can lead to many systemic health problems (i.e. high blood pressure and a number of cardiac pathologies.)

10 warning signs of sleep apnea:

  • Loud, irregular snoring
  • Morning headaches
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • High blood pressure
  • Dry mouth upon awakening
  • Obesity
  • Excessive sweating
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Depression
  • Reflux

Snoring

Many of the patients that have sleep disorders are snorers, which is a clear signal that an airway is constricted. The following Epworth Sleepiness Scale can measure your degree of sleepiness.

Please indicate the likelihood that you would fall asleep in the following situation on a scale ranging from 0 - 3. Zero being you would never dose, and three being that there is a high chance of dozing.

Snoring and Children

Children who snore can have significant facial growth changes as a result of the airway obstruction. Early diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders can significantly improve your quality of life.
